In the 1980s both his life and work are pervaded by a general rejection of the social order. During this period the artist keeps to an alternative, perhaps even anarchist lifestyle. He leads a nomadic existence as an activist of the squatter\u0026rsquo;s movement in Geneva, and takes part in radical, anti-establishment protests. Gygi\u0026rsquo;s interest in authority and the unmasking of the mechanisms by which authority avails itself, come to expression in his performances and installations. In his performances he explores his body\u0026rsquo;s limits by setting it extreme tests. These theatrical bodily mutilations bespeak a particularly ambivalent stance: his protest against authority is paired with a great fascination for power and the conviction that an authority figure lies dormant in us all. In the creation of his installations, Gygi uses everyday objects that radiate authority: (para)military equipment, nationalist emblems, crowd barriers and command/prohibition signs that serve to keep sporting events or parties under control. The installations confront the viewer with the ever-increasing control- and power mechanisms in our society that impede our freedom of movement. De kunstenaar houdt er in die periode een alternatieve, misschien wel anarchistische, levensstijl op na. Hij leidt een nomadisch bestaan als activist van de krakersbeweging te Gen\u0026egrave;ve en neemt deel aan radicale protestacties tegen het establishment. Gygi\u0026rsquo;s interesse in autoriteit en in het ontmaskeren van de mechanismen waarvan autoriteit zich bedient, komt ook tot uiting in zijn performances en installaties. In zijn performances tast hij de grenzen van zijn lichaam af door het zwaar op de proef te stellen. Uit deze theatrale verminkingen van het eigen lichaam spreekt een bijzonder ambivalente houding: zijn protest tegen autoriteit gaat gepaard aan een grote fascinatie voor macht en de overtuiging dat in elk mens een autoritair figuur schuilgaat. Voor de creatie van zijn installaties maakt Gygi gebruik van alledaagse voorwerpen die autoriteit uitstralen zoals (para)militaire uitrusting, nationalistische emblemen, dranghekken en ge/verbodstekens die dienen om sportmanifestaties of fuiven in goede banen te leiden. De installaties confronteren de kijker met de steeds toenemende controle- en machtsmechanismen in onze samenleving die onze bewegingsvrijheid belemmeren.
