Transformatie van grondstoffen is een motief, haar drijfveer milieubescherming.\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAl vroeg werd de jonge kunstenares gefascineerd door wat ze 'glinstering' en 'glans' noemt: de oppervlaktekwaliteiten van natuurlijke bronnen zoals mica, een mineraal dat in make-up wordt gebruikt en op die manier in een verleidingsobject verandert. Vanuit deze interesse (zowel voor de grondstof als de transformatie) heeft ze de intensieve ontginning van de natuurlijke hulpbronnen onderzocht binnen de context van het laatkapitalisme. Nkanga zoekt ook op tastbare wijze naar de onderlinge verbanden tussen omgeving, architectuur en geschiedenis. Ze weet politieke onderwerpen op te nemen in poëtische\u0026nbsp;combinaties van autobiografische en collectieve verhalen, herinneringen en concepten. Op een bijzonder zachtmoedige manier - zowel wat presentatie als wat kleurgebruik betreft - combineert Nkanga de geschiedenis van de Afrikaanse cultuur met hedendaagse westerse invloeden. Ze gebruikt allerhande natuurlijke en organische elementen (planten, grondstoffen, gesteenten, barsten in de aardkorst) die ze onderling verbindt met figuratieve lijnen en elementen die betrekking (kunnen) hebben op zowel een Afrikaanse als een Westerse context. De beelden zijn nooit agressief, dwingend of controversieel, ze laten integendeel ruimte voor interpretatie: van milde verwondering tot stilmakend inzicht en besef.
