This compelled some critics to argue that instead of revealing the mechanisms of imitation and appropriation of tribal art by Western modernists, the exhibition represented \u0026ldquo;the idea of an underlying affinity between Western artists and \u0026ldquo;primitives\u0026rdquo; to demonstrate \u0026ldquo;the universality of the Modernist canon\u0026rdquo; (Thomas McEvilley).
