It was founded at a conference held in Cairo held from December 1957 to January 1958. The IX Council Session in Tripoli was one of the largest meetings with 55 Afro-Asian member organisations participating and Observer delegations from socialist countries and other friendly international organisations being present. The session formed a militant line on intensifying 'people’s struggle against imperialism'.
