I spend out 450 letters and got only 69 replies. They were all admitted. Unfortunately the budget did not allow me to have them translated: the answers were printed in facsimile. This is not only my work, but foremost the work of everybody that had any part in it, for which I thank you. It does not show an insight or approach of the thesis, but a scale of sometimes opposing views. I can yield them, you can yield them. It is part of seeing the complexity in our thoughts about art and it\u0026#39;s relation to the society. It is part of something greater that strains to contain and embrace this complexity. Ik verzond een vragenlijst naar kunstenaars, kunstcritici, kunsthistorici, galeriehouders, museumdirecteurs....uit binnen en buitenland. De vragen waren: - Is er een breuk tussen hedendaagse kunstuitingen en de samenleving? - Zo ja, welke zijn hiervan de oorzaken? - Zo neen, verklaar uw standpunt. Ik adresseerde mij aan 450 personen en kreeg 69 reacties. Allemaal werden ze opgenomen. Helaas liet het budget niet toe ze te vertalen: de antwoorden werden facsimile afgedrukt. [...] Dit is niet enkel mijn werk, het is in de eerste plaats het werk van iedereen die eraan zijn bereidwillige medewerking verleende, waarvoor hier dank. Het toont niet een inzicht of benaderingswijze van de vraagstelling, maar een waaier van soms tegengestelde zienswijzen, waarmee ik kan instemmen, waarmee U kunt instemmen. Het laat een stukje zien van de complexiteit bij het denken over kunst en haar relatie tot de samenleving. Het is een onderdeel van een totaalproject dat deze complexiteit poogt te bevatten en te omvatten.
