The elevator has a single glass wall on the side of the fitted ladder. In this way, the ladder can never be seen in its entirety at any one instant. When the elevator rises, the \u0026lsquo;tree ladder\u0026rsquo; sways. When it descends, the ladder gives the impression of ascending (growing). The ladder\u0026rsquo;s organic structure refers to the natural world, where the tree was indeed our first ladder. The off-shoots (the small accessory ladders) suggest that the ladder grows along with our desires. The different wood-colors, and the use of gold color as the ladder ascends symbolizes man\u0026rsquo;s urge to surpass himself.\u003c/em\u003e\u0026nbsp;\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe tension between nature and culture runs as a common thread throughout Duchateau\u0026rsquo;s oeuvre, and is also a prominent theme in \u003cem\u003eThe Growing Ladder\u003c/em\u003e.
